Harcus Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Currently reading Roddy Doyle - The woman who walked into doors. Read the sequel first. Can't say I'm overly impressed by either. Recently finished a book about the trucking industry in North America. Got a big stack to read having been at a used book sale the other day. Quote
BigAl Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Well I don't think you would like the books I read Al Do they have a lot of pictures Quote
Andrew Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Currently reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. About 3/4 quarters of the way through and its really quite good but very weird. Quote
Goldie03 Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Do they have a lot of pictures Only the gay magazines Quote
DerBomber Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 At the moment I am reading The Greatest Battle: The Fight for Moscow 1941-42 by andrew nagorski. Good read so far aboot a battle thats not been covered in much depth before that I have seen. Also finished Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Good book. Quote
Kowalski Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Posted April 29, 2009 Still reading Dreams from my Father by Barack Obama. About 3/4 of the way through. Quote
Andrew Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 If ye like the Gonzo style - read Hunter S. Thomson's "Hell's Angels" too. Found "The Great Shark Hunt" hard going - too much politics but some funny stories, for example, about the Kentucky Derby. Don't think I ever did finish reading the book though. Yea I really liked Charles Buckowski's books and I have read almost all of them and I'm trying to stay in the down and out in America sort of books. Quote
Andrew Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Try "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac I'm nae mad keen on American books - find the tone many are written in difficult to follow. Often over descriptive. I've tried reading "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M. Pirsig about 5 times and have never finished it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_and_the_Art_of_Motorcycle_Maintenance That book looks good and also quite hard going though. Thinking about buying some John Fante books but not sure if I can be fucked. I always buy too many books and never get round to reading them. I've read On the Road. Thought it was ok but I should probably try and read it again as it was a two or three years ago I read it, if not longer ago, and I would probably appreciate it more now. Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 I haven't read a book in just under a year! So I bought Alex James' (from Blur) autobiography. So far, so good. I'm the same, I was going through loads of books last year but I've only opened one in 2009 and only got as far as halfway down page 1. Don't know why that is. Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 Actually having thought about it, I know exactly why I haven't picked up a book. I bought a netbook at Xmas and have been passing travelling/commuting time by watching films I've downloaded. I've watched some fucking terrible films recently. I need to start reading again. Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 I did indeed. It's the bollocks. Quote
Andrew Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Currently reading One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. What a silly billy Stalin was. Quote
glasgowdon Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Currently reading One Day in the Life of Spot the Dog. What a silly billy Spot was. Quote
manc_don Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Currently reading One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. What a silly billy Stalin was. Russian/Soviet history is facinating. Quote
dave_min Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Russian/Soviet history is facinating. I agree, i'm currently reading "Cuba: A Modern History" it's pretty heavy going at times, but endlessly fascinating. Quote
Harcus Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Awesome. Perhaps this would be more up your alley. I'm currently reading this. Distinctly average thus far. Quote
glasgowdon Posted May 18, 2009 Report Posted May 18, 2009 Perhaps this would be more up your alley. Indeed, Turing machines are awesome. Quote
BigAl Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Not had time to post on here sorry read of late, but holidays coming up, so any fresh recommendations from anyone Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Picked up my first book in 6 months - The Alchemist's Secret. Very Dan Brown, in fact so much like 'The Da Vinci Code' that I'm beginning to wonder how he's not been done for plagerism. On a side note I watched 'Angels & Demons' at the weekend. Load of shite. Enjoyed TDVC but remember when I read A&D that I thought it wouldn't make such a good movie. Think they've changed the ending a bit though, which they had to do, but I'll have to go back and re-read it as I can't really remember what's different from the novel. Quote
Kowalski Posted June 8, 2009 Author Report Posted June 8, 2009 Just finished David Peace - The Damned Utd. A cracking read, thoroughly enjoyed it. Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Sorry, I thought we were just making words up from now on: I'm not saying that I wan't McGhee to fail. I will be delighted if he does well. It is however a bit rich for one of the main leaders of the JMG group to tell me how to behave towards the new manager after the way he made an arse of the Aberdeen support in the media. Quote
Harcus Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Reading "My Name is Legion" by A. N. Wilson. Quite an enjoyable satire on the Daily Mail, amongst other things. Quote
Superstar Tradesman Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 touche However that was more about thinking about writing one thing then writing another and not correcting myself. as opposed to not actually knowing how to spell a word but using it anyway. Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. Quote

Didn't several people try to sue Dan Brown for plagiarism when The Da Vinci Code first became famous. I've never read it but a mate of mine, who reads far too many books to be considered normal, described it as formulaic, tired American pish that could have been written by anyone following a "how to write a novel" guide. I think the fact that every chapter was a set number of pages really got on his tits as well. Safe to say he didn't like it and that is probably one of the reasons I've never bothered to pick up a copy. Quote
