manc_don Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 3-0, McLean, what a goal. Well set up by Goodwillie too. Could have gone for it himself but McLean was the better option. FUCKING BRILLIANT :ultras: Quote
wi_09 Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 Delighted for McLean to break his duck. That should be a huge weight off his shoulders! Could easily hit double figures this season if he stays fit. :AFC2: Quote

Jute Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 Never saw that coming. Fantastic performance against a team that have only lost one in their last 52 home matches and not lost at home in Europe since 2009. Quote
manc_don Posted July 16, 2015 Report Posted July 16, 2015 Bit of context for today's result We've also just equaled their heaviest ever European defeat, which was 3-0 (obviously) against Partizan Belgrade in '99! Quote

Tyrant Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I always thought the "gulf in class" between us and them was overstated. Although I didn't know much about them. Truth be told I'd never heard of them before the drew a few weeks back. Having said that that result was above and beyond what I'd hoped for. We were lucky early on that they were wasteful. But we weathered the early storm and were clinical (for once!!) The tie's not done though. Same again next week. Hit them on the counter. We need to be tighter at the back because although we didn'ce concede last night we really should have. Thoroughly impressed with the whole team. Shinnie, Ward, Logan and Goodwillie stood out for me. Thoroughly enjoying seeing Shinnie play in a Dons shirt. Quote
tom_widdows Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 Watching the goals again and I see Pawlett was actually offside for the second goal. Handy that the linesman was too busy watching Logan's Franz Carr impression Quote
BigAl Posted July 17, 2015 Author Report Posted July 17, 2015 Well the bookies seem to have written us off in this one with longer odds on us than recent games against the victims at the Tattiebowl. Reckon we might just cause a little shock in this and going for a score draw. Need to keep it tight for first half hour and work our way into the game. Even an odd goal defeat, as long as we get away goal would be a good result and surely guarantee a full house for the return. Out Work Watching on Premier Sports Bed 1.1 ( MacLean to break his duck in spectacular fashion). Delighted to be wrong with score forecast, and also delighted with prediction that MacLean would score Quote
scotfree Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Looks like the boys had a little help to gee them up.... http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/andy-considine-derek-mcinnes-worked-6091067 DEREK McINNES pulled off a managerial masterclass to wreck Rijeka – but it was a Croatian journo who provided his team talk. Andy Considine revealed it was team-mate Shay Logan’s run-in with a local hack that made the Dons doubly determined to do a number on the cocky Croats. Logan had a spiky pre-match press conference with the Rijeka media then clashed with one of them pitchside on the eve of Thursday night’s game. The bust-up got back to the dressing room – and it managed to inspire the Reds to a memorable European win. Aberdeen withstood brutal temperatures to clobber the Croats 3-0 and move within touching distance of the Europa League third qualifying round for the second year on the trot. Boss McInnes got his tactics spot on as his side survived an early onslaught from the Croatians before running riot in a vintage performance. But defender Considine admitted they had the hapless hack to thank for firing up the Reds to go marching on. The 28-year-old – who grabbed the first goal of an incredible night – said: “One of the Croatian press guys went at Shay big time the day before the game. “He said to Shay, ‘Don’t you dare come here and win.’ He told him there was no chance we would win, stuff like that. It was a bit off to be honest. “Shay came in and told us what was said – it did rile us up a bit. There was no need for it.” Aberdeen’s incredible display even had the locals on their feet applauding at the end. Considine was convinced the Dons could do a number on the Croatians – but he didn’t expect to dish out a Balkans battering. Rijeka’s scenic stadium has been a fortress in recent seasons – with Lyon, Feyenoord and Sevilla all struggling at the Kantrida. But Aberdeen blew them away to all but guarantee a slot in round three – where a clash with either St Johnstone’s conquerors Alashkert or FC Kairat from Kazakhstan awaits. It would take a catastrophic collapse to deny them now but Considine insists there can be no let up in next week’s return. He said: “The gaffer mentioned Rijeka’s results in the Europa League beforehand and we knew they would be a great scalp “To come away three up was amazing. We all believed we could get a result but to win 3-0 was a heck of a feat. “They hadn’t lost at home in Europe for 12 games. “They’ve got the better of some seriously good teams during that time. When you look at it like that it’s an even better result. “It’s still only half-time though. There is a lot to play for. “We need to be on our toes in the home leg – just like we were the other night. We have to be bang at it to get the job done on Thursday. Hopefully there will be a full house at Pittodrie. “The fans who went to Croatia were fantastic. We owe them thanks but hopefully we can get a few more goals and get the job finished back home. “It will be another tough game. If we can get though we will be seeded in the next round so it could be really exciting.” Considine admitted the stunning win was all the more impressive given the torturous conditions in Croatia. The scorching heat was almost unbearable and it was still 30-odd degrees Celsius when the game kicked off at 9pm. The Dons were given the green light by UEFA to have a couple of water breaks – which was just as well as Considine and Co were sweating buckets. The ploy paid off and the stopper reckons the victory was as good as any he has been involved in during his 11 years at Pittodrie. The long-serving stalwart was part of side that got through to the UEFA Cup group stage in season 2007-08 by blasting past Ukrainian outfit Dnipro. After drawing with Lokomotiv Moscow and beating Copenhagen, Jimmy Calderwood’s side marched on to the last 32, where they lost out to Bayern Munich. Aberdeen drew 2-2 with the German giants in the home leg but Thursday’s Rijeka ram raid might just have topped the lot, given the conditions they played in. Considine said: “It was horrible out there. Those were the worst conditions I have ever played in. I don’t know what it was like for the people in the stands but it was very tough on the pitch. “We you look at all that, it just shows how good a result it was. “We’ve managed a few good ones over the years but this was right up there. Rijeka have such a strong record at home. “The Groningen game was tough last year but this side were a step up and there was the heat to take into consideration. “But the experience of last year helped us. We know when to attack and when to defend. The gaffer learned from last year as well and it paid dividends. “The first 10 minutes were a bit of a nightmare. They came at us thick and fast. They had a few chances and hit the post. “The water break came at a good time for us. The gaffer said a few things and we sorted it out. We calmed down and started passing the ball. “There was a huge difference. It was great to get the goal. “The entire team defended really well and it’s a superb result to take into the second leg. “The clean sheet was just as pleasing. If they had nicked one it could have opened the floodgates. You never know what can happen when you go to places like that. “We showed them a lot of respect and likewise they showed us respect. Their manager said we taught them a lesson but it was about us taking our chances. “We were solid. They had some tricky players in midfield but the boys did well to snuff them out. “As long as we play like that again next week then we can look forward to the next round.” Quote
manc_don Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 To be fair to their manager, he said we taught them a footballing lesson. Let's just hope we do that again in the second leg! Quote
