LA-Don Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 No clue about the keeper although we need one, but I’d take Ball back as a sub/back up. He can play multiple positions and a decent guy to be sitting on the bench. However, we still need 3-4 quality players who will be starting/pushing for a starting position to creat the necessary competition for playing time. Neither are that. Quote

I reckon at most, we will sign 2 players from Championship/League 1 on loan and that'll be that. Possibly find a Striker for the 250k we offered for Marquis and 1 loan at most. Isn't there a deadline for registering players for the Europa League? It can't be too far away. Quote
Dunty Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Wouldn't surprise me re-Dom Ball. He was actually holidaying with one of the players, think it was Scott Wright. Both took their Mrs' to Dubai. Not that relevant I suppose, but at least shows he made good pals up here. Decent back-up. But McInnes said he expects to sign two more players so if Ball is just on loan hopefully he's not counted as one of the two. Nowak still on trial? Still hopeful Greg Stewart might come back too, this time on a permanent deal. He wouldn't be too bad an option up front either. Quote
Jute Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Ball was at best mediocre in midfield and brutal at right back. Squad players should be there to push for first team places not warm the bench. We should be looking for better than Ball. If keeper is right then there was clearly no plan in place when Rogers was put on loan as this guy was on trial at another club when Rogers went to St Mirren. Quote
donsdaft Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Ball was truly awful in midfield. I've seldom seen a player looking so lost. If we are taking shite like him back in then things are really bad behind the scenes at Pittodrie. Quote

CvB Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 there's a hell of a lot of pant pishing based on rumors from the s*n and the re**rd. Quote
BobbyBiscuit Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Or smacks of Gleeson having picked up a fairly bad knee injury? Is Ball the only midfielder on the planet we could get? I know you're a DM fan and all that, and he can do no wrong, but even you can't be inspired by this? Quote

I know you're a DM fan and all that, and he can do no wrong, but even you can't be inspired by this? Not especially a Ball fan either, especially at RB cover, but I can see the logic in taking on someone the gaffer knows well if to cover for our defensive midfield signing who seems to have got a bit of a nasty injury in pre-season. I can't get overly upset about it if I'm honest, and if we're demanding to be inspired by backup defensive midfield signings then we're even more self entitled as a support than I thought. Quote

No one's demanding anything and no one is upset, as far as I can see. It's just a discussion, but you charge on with that pish all you want. Quote

I never said you or anyone else was upset, I said I wasn't Let's not forget you were complaining about us only signing "names" last summer who looked good on paper, rather than there being a logic behind them, so I'm not sure how that fits in with your desire to be "inspired". If this is a short term replacement for Gleeson then the likelihood is it's been sprung upon us, and McInnes has moved quickly to plug the gap with the Burnley games in mind especially. Quote
Ten Caat Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 I thought Ball was ok in midfield but absolutely honking at right back. I'd tend to agree if he is indeed returning on loan then Gleeson's knee injury is fairly serious. Downside is that we probably won't sign a proper right back to cover Logan. If McInnes plays Ball at right back against sevco in the league opener God help us Quote

I wasn't happy with us signing players based purely on reputation rather than how they'd fit in with our system, but you're not sure how that fits in with my desire to be "inspired". Eh? Take a guess. It being a short term solution, or anything along those lines doesn't make Ball a better player than he is. And that's the point myself and Jute, I believe, were getting at. If Gleeson's injury is such that we have to have a replacement brought in then I would hope it would be of a decent standard, I don't think Ball is of that decent standard. Quote

And I don't think he's especially great either, but I can understand the signing. After all, it was a position which McInnes already ticked off this summer before Gleeson's injury. I daresay we could have looked at other defensive midfield options, but they may not necessarily have borne fruit before the Burnley games and we need somebody immediately. Goodness knows we'd also have heard all about it if we'd gone into Burnley without any sort of defensive midfielder and it cost us. Quote
rocket_scientist Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 I thought Ball was ok in midfield but absolutely honking at right back. I don't agree that he was "ok" at any time. He's like Tansey and Greg Stewart, he's far from ok. A good manager understands the critical importance of the midfield. Without men in the middle, good footballers who are hungry, who work hard, with competent technical skills that they can tackle, read the game, break up the opposition, keep control of the ball and distribute it effectively, a team has no engine. Souness's criticism of England was spot on. He described the balance of the team as all wrong for one reason and one reason only; Delle Ali and Lindgard weren't good enough, being players rather then breakers (my terminology, not his). Souness argued that there wasn't enough bite and strength in the middle of the park and I thought it was interesting that Southgate dropped both against Belgium. Where Southgate may well be a total pussy politician who bowed to the external opinion of a footballer who was far superior than he was (or it could've been a remarkable coincidence), McInnes doesn't even understand the conversation. But even this tactical deficiency isn't McInnes's greatest crime, fatal as it is. Where Southgate surprised a lot of us by galvanising, motivating and inspiring a bunch of average (at that level) footballers to perform at their best, the recruits that McInnes takes in consistently perform well below their capabilities, which weren't even good enough to start with. Another fruitless season awaits. Quote
BigAl Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Lyness is a GK, he was on trial at St Johnstone recently, although they opted not to sign him. Almost 27 years of age and the grand total of 59 league games in English Leagues 1&2 Bossu MK 2 anyone Quote

BigAl Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 So we've decided he's shite already. Fantastic. Don't see those words anywhere in my post. Folk have been puzzled by the scenario whereby Rogers gets a contract extension and immediately goes out on loan again despite him not being deemed good enough for us in January when Lewis was injured. On that basis, I'm sure most people expected us to sign a better known back up keeper. Call me negative if you like, but I can't honestly say I am inspired by this and looks like a Bossu/Lennox type signing Quote

Someone who's effective if and when called upon will do me. This boy may or may not have it. Not quite getting the widespread bemusement around Rogers' situation either. Perhaps McInnes sees good potential in Rogers (still very young for a keeper), but he's not quite at the stage where he can be relied upon week in, week out for us yet in the event anything happens to our excellent Number 1 - hence the loan to a club in the same league as us to get him tested. Sitting on the bench for us won't benefit him in the same way. Quote

CtS Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 I’m notoriously lazy, and can’t be arsed checking to see if anyone’s done a definitive ‘players out / players in’ list. Can any of you feckers help? I’ll start..... Players out : Dominic Ball, Kenny McLean Players in : Dominic Ball Quote
LA-Don Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 I’m sticking with what I said earlier. Ball is a squad filler provided we sign 3-4 quality starting players. If that doesn’t happen and we’re more reliant on Ball as a regular player then it’s majorly underwhelming. Quote

Can any of you feckers help? I’ll start..... Players out : Dominic Ball, Kenny McLean Players in : Dominic Ball Here’s how I see it, not totally like for like but you may see where I’m coming from - Gone are Woodman and Rogers - we need a replacement Arneson - replaced by Devlin OConnor - replaced by Gleeson Ball - provides cover at holding mid, right back, even central defense - need a replacement McLean - replaced by Forrester Maynard - replaced by Cosgrove Christie - Stewart - Youth replaces the youth that left Expect Tansey gone and replaced by Ferguson Sadly it doesn’t appear we are improving the squad but simply trying to find adequate replacements. Considine needs replaced, we need a threatening and goal scoring striker, and I think we need a quality wide player as what we have isn’t consistent enough. Quote
A llad insane Posted July 17, 2018 Report Posted July 17, 2018 Going against some of the other replies here,i'm actually pleased Ball is coming back for another stint. I actually thought it might happen (& said so , at the end of last season), chances are, he will probably be back up anyway but i think he is a very capable holding midfielder. T.b.h i have more concerns about who is going to be (hopefully) banging them in this season, would like to see a more mobile goal grabber as we dont have one. Quote
