Dons ace Alan Maybury can silence Celtic star Aiden McGeady in Sunday's Scottish Cup showdown says boss Jimmy Calderwood.

The Hoops wing king tormented Aberdeen in last month's 5-1 SPL victory at Pittodrie.

Maybury was pitched in against the 21-year-old in only his first league appearance for the Dons.

But after establishing himself as a first choice pick at right back, Jimmy Calderwood is confident Maybury can halt McGeady this time.

"Alan did reasonably well against Aiden although he wasn't offered much protection from his team-mates," said Calderwood.

"But he's certainly got the capabilities to cancel him completely on Sunday and if he could, it would improve our chances of winning the game greatly.

"It's not going to be easy especially the way Aiden has been performing.

"For everyone connected with Celtic and the neutrals, he was a joy to watch against us.

"But Alan is much sharper now after enjoying a run of games in the first team so I'm confident he'll handle the test at the weekend."

Calderwood also paid tribute to his counterpart Strachan despite the Champions League exit to Barcelona.

The Bhoys lost 1-0 at the Nou Camp to crash out of Europe but that hasn't stopped Calderwood marvelling at the way Strachan's side has performed.

He's been impressed with the quality squad he's assembled at Parkhead who he reckons will rise again on the continent.

He added: "Gordon has done a fantastic job as he has quality cover in nearly every position on the pitch.

"Perhaps the only role he's not doubled up in is left back.

"But when it comes to creative players he has lots of choice.

"Shunsuke Nakamura, Paul Hartley and Massimo Donati are all threats and we'll have to watch them all at the weekend.

"Celtic will be disappointed at going out of Europe but they'll be more determined to do well domestically."

Calderwood is waiting on news of his injured players ahead of the Scottish Cup crunch.

Steve Lovell, who scored against Rangers, now has a chance of playing after recovering from an ankle knock.

Jamie Smith and Derek Young are also battling back from hamstring problems but Darren Mackie is out of the Celtic match.

Here we go again, lets concern ourselves with the opposition instead of looking to play to our strenghts.

I think it was  racist Ron Atkinson who coined the phrase "He needs to put a reducer in early on to see how he handles it"

Seriously though, maybe we should be concerning ourselfs with how WE are going to put the ball in the opposition net rather than worrying about Celtic. We already know what they can do. Lets be a bit more adventurous.

McGeady was atrocious today.  It wasn't completely down to Maybury (who did play very well), but McGeady just wasn't at the races at all.

Agreed, but the problem being we still didn't beat them with the traitorous little shite and Nakamura having an off day. Canne see them being so ineffective again in the replay

surely we could use some of that "european cash" to hire a hitman...or failing that some clogger playing for united or motherwell to take them out before we play them

We need to get Maybury signed on a permanent deal, he's done very well for us.

Has to be top priority now.  Longer we leave it the more chance someone else will sign him up on pre-contract.

Excuse my ignorance on this one, but he is currently on loan to us ? Take it he is out contract at Leicester in the summer then ? Beware of Harry Potter making overtures to take him to Tannalice then >:(

£25 million? I wouldn't pay £25 for him on this performance.

Thought he did well today also and has been good enough to try and get on a permanent deal (if possible of course)
