Hearts captain Marius Zaliukas missed the defeat by Rangers on the order of club owner Vladimir Romanov.

Manager Jim Jefferies told the defender of the decision after a phone call from Lithuania before Saturday's game.

When asked about the Lithuanian's absence, Jefferies said: "He wasn't available for selection - that's as much as I'm going to say on it."

Zaliukas was also frozen out of the team until October as he stalled on accepting a permanent contract offer.

However, the player was eventually brought back into the side and agreed a new deal in November to keep him at Tynecastle until 2013.

The 27-year-old joined Hearts from Kaunas, who are sponsored by Romanov's bank Ukio Bankas, on-loan in August 2006 and quickly became a regular in the first team.

Manager Jim Jefferies appointed him as club captain last summer following the departure of Michael Stewart - despite the player failing to agree a new deal.

Romanov will attend Tynecastle on Wednesday for Hearts' last home match of this Scottish Premier League season against Celtic.

Since taking over the Tynecastle club in February 2005, Romanov has seen off six different managers, with suggestions that the businessman wanted to have a say in team selection.

Romanov still calling the shots.

Hearts have been fined £100,000 by the Scottish Football Association's disciplinary committee for their poor on-field behaviour last season.

This is the seventh successive term that Hearts have been sanctioned and it is the highest-ever fine imposed on a club for indiscipline.

Of the £100,000 punishment, £60,000 is due to be paid immediately.

David Obua joined injured duo Andy Webster and Mehdi Taouil in missing Hearts' flight to Hungary - because the utility man's passport has run out.

The Uganda international instead flew to London in an attempt to receive the appropriate documentation from his country's embassy.

Hearts manager Jim Jefferies hopes Obua will face Paks in a Europa League third qualifying tie in Budapest.

"If he can get things sorted out, he will be with us on Wednesday," he said.

"It won't be a disaster as he will have missed just the one training session tomorrow evening.

"It is something we have to deal with and something we are working on to resolve."

Obua, who scored Hearts goal in Saturday's opening 1-1 draw with Rangers in the Scottish Premier League, must first renew his passport and then head for the Hungarian Embassy to obtain a visa for the trip.

Not bad. Yer paid quite well by a club to help them in europe but casually forget you dont have a valid passport

Fair enough it's wikipedia, but this has got to be a new low - listing third in your major honours.

:o

Likely a mischevious Hibs fan.

Is it any worse than having

Texaco Cup Finalists: 1970-71

in their Trophies Won section?
