"Jamie will see a specialist to get to the root of the problem. He has had injury problems since coming here but it doesn't look like another hamstring this time.

"Pain is coming from his back and shooting down his leg.

"It is a very depressing situation for the player as he had worked so hard in training to regain fitness.

When he went off I noticed he wasnt limping, but just walking fine which did make me think. Any of you medical professionals like to take a stab at what would be causing shooting pains? Lower back muscles?

But if they are not sure what is wrong, how do they know he will be out for the rest of the season?

Was disappointed to see JC taking absolutely no blame whatsoever for rushing Smith back too early and this injury flaring up again.

If Smith can finally get to the bottom of this problem and stay injury free for an extended period, he is undoubtedly our best and most creative player.

Presumably Smith himself and the medical staff are at fault here?

Potentially, but Jimmy has the final call. After such an extended period out, Smiths ability to impact the game on Sunday has to be called into question, with or without the recurrence of the injury.

There's no potential about it. Smith and the medics have the final call and if they don't they are useless at their jobs.

Smith was out for a while before Copenhagen too. He had a fair impact on that game and we are a better team with him. But as I said, if the medics and players are being told who's fit and who's not then they are still culpable for not telling Calderwood to get fucked.

Howzit Jimmy's fault exactly?

I thought he was walking a bit gingerly for a few minutes before he went off - I said to my mate that I thought Smith was coming off as soon as we saw Aluko getting ready despite (misplaced) wishful thinking at the time that it would be de Visscher getting hooked.

A few years back Man United's Ryan Giggs had persistent problems with his hamstring...or so they thought. Turned out to be that the car he was driving was causing the problem. His lower back muscles were causing the hamstrings to tighten due to the position of the car seat.

He switched cars and no longer had a problem. I'm not suggesting that Smithy should trade in his Lambourghini or in his case Meriva like Giggsy did, but maybe the medics have to look at his lifestyle to see if he is doing anything that could cause his persistent problems. Just a thought.

That would be the professional thing to do. However . . . . . .

Unfortunately, simple wear and tear, such as twisting the wrong way too many times (and lifting heavy things repeatedly - like the whole team) can cause lower back pain that radiates down the legs. Intensive physio, chriopracty and rest can help, but if the damage is already done then it may already be too late and this problem could reoccur again and again.

Maybe he should trade the Nova with the bucket seats with the  Max Power sticker in for something more sensible then CB?!

Was it Colin Cameron who had persistent hamstring/groin problems that were eventually traced to the alignment of his teeth? If a player's worth as much to the team as JC thinks Smith is to us, then surely we should be looking at spending a bit of money to get a proper medical specialist to look at him, get his injury problems cleared up and give us a player who could, potentially, be the difference between 5th place obscurity and 3rd place Euro spot glory.

Assuming this is a "wear and tear" ailment.

There are loads of things this could be but it has taken our "medical" team this long to contemplate an alternate diagnosis from "done his hammy Jimmy"
