Do we have shitloads of cover at CB? With Devlin & Considine gone and McCrorie earmarked for elsewhere, I wouldn't say we're well covered there at all.

We should sign players who are an improvement on what we have.

Step forward Michael Hector.

We have two right sided centre backs and no left sided centre backs. McRorie can also cover on the right. All three are shite on the left. We've just had an entire season of proof of how disastrous that is. I've never seen Hector play on his wrong side to pass comment, but you don't actively sign a player to play on his weaker side for obvious reasons (it's fine if it happens due to injury of course).

We should only sign players who are an improvement if we're removing others from the squad. Otherwise that budget is taken from another area on the pitch. The last thing we need is the expense of both Bates and Gallagher on the bench when we could spend that on a good attacking midfielder. At our level, it's always an either or.

Going to go against the grain and say would not be keen on signing Hector. Think we would be paying over the odds for a mediocre player. Also as Rico says we already have plenty right sided cover at centre back. Would rather we looked at strengthening other areas first.

As for Rooney cannot fault his work ethic but St Johnstone are his level. We should be looking for better.

Who said anything about playing Hector on the left?

If there was any possibility of signing Hector (and I doubt there is tbf) and we turned him down because we've got Declan Gallagher there, then that might be what finally ends me.

It's fairly straight forward. We don't currently have a left sided centre half, so we absolutely need to sign one of those. It's in the top three priority wise (I'd say the top, but it doesn't matter). If we sign Hector, then we've got two very expensive centre backs on the bench (plus McRorie as cover for that position if required). We're not going to turn down signing Hector because we want to play Gallagher, but because we've already got Gallagher and it might be difficult to offload him. My point throughout has been that we shouldn't sign players without offloading others first. I actually don't know what you're suggesting? Is it that you think we can not sign a left sided centre back? Or do you think we can have a squad containing Gallagher, Bates and Hector? Otherwise we're in agreement, that Hector could only join in place of one of the existing players (although I wouldn't be entirely comfortable with a player like Bates on the bench, that'd be expensive).

If we had the remotest chance of signing Hector, then absolutely we should sign him regardless of whoever is in the squad already. The same way I wouldn't turn down Graeme Shinnie because we've already got Dean Campbell.

Would it impact on signing a LCB, I don't know, but on account he's a better RCB than anyone else at the club he would add value to the team.

Dean Campbell wouldn't be a high earner unlike both Gallagher and Bates, it's not remotely the same. There would be no point at which you would say that a certain position doesn't really need improving and that other priorities would be better pursued? I'd like to think that's where the recruitment specialist would intervene and then the chairman. It would be a shocking use of budget. It's not a case of a player adding value, it's about how much value a player can add if the priority areas aren't addressed. Do you genuinely think Hector is that good that he could hold together a defence of one? Any good left sided centre back alongside Bates would be significantly better than Hector and Bates (on the left). He was pish there in his own right without adding Gallagher to the mix, there's nothing Hector could do to improve him.

Stop fretting about how much Hector is going to cost, Goodwin is currently negotiating a bargain deal to land Charles Dunne for the left side.

It'll be fine. Peterhead and Stirling Albion won't know what's hit them.

To be fair, I'd take a dream homecoming of Shaugnessy and Hector. With Bates and Gallagher sent on a permanent North sea cruise.

Quote

Rangers hold off competition from Man Utd and Liverpool to sign Aberdeen starlet Lancelot Pollard (says tabloid equating itself to an astronomical bag of gas)

In other news, I just beat Elon Musk and the Pope to the last pack of mince in my local Sainsburys.  Somebody go tell them they are out of the running.

There is also rumour about a defensive central midfielder from MTK Budapest. Albanian international born in Germany. Absolutely no idea if any of the rumours on the go are true. Cannot see us paying £1m fee for anyone.
